Zermatt

Overview

Home to the most recognizable mountain in Europe, the unmistakable and awe-inspiring Matterhorn, Zermatt is the busiest base village in the Switzerland Hiking Tours repertoire, and regular vacation destination for celebrities and jet-setters from across the globe. Join us in 2015 as we help celebrate the 150th anniversary of the first successful ascent of the magnificent, massive, Matterhorn. Not to be missed is the Matterhorn Museum, right next to the old church in the town center. It’s there where we discover the history and legend that surrounds this commanding peak and learn why President Theodore Roosevelt just had to climb it. Unfairly described by Rick Steves as a “one mountain town”, Zermatt is our starting point for hiking trails with dazzling views of over 29 different peaks that are over 12,000 feet above sea-level, including the Monta Rosa, Switzerland’s highest mountain. On a sunny day, we’ll look off to the south and west for panoramic views of the snow-capped mountains of the Italian and French Alps. Please visit our Facebook page for pictures taken during the 2014 hiking season.
